BLACK HANDS WHITE HOUSES

Black Hands White Houses Poster

A dynamic new interactive exhibition celebrating more than five decades of printed material by, for, and about African-Americans.

Two years in the making - Black Hands White Houses: Black Writers of the Twentieth Century takes a diverse look at more than five decades of printed matter by, for, & about African-American's. Most of the 500 plus odd titles of fiction, non-fiction, pulp fiction and propaganda, guidebooks, and pamphlets and periodicals on display were acquired specifically for this exhibition.

Because the shape of the collection was dictated not by any intrinsic idea of excellence but by a desire to recognize a broader liberal view of black writing; Black Hands White Houses beautifully gleams in part, one because many of the big name authors are included: Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, & Maya Angelou to name but a few and two, because what sets this exhibition apart is its inclusion of many rare, hard-to-find, & obscure titles all beautifully accompanied by a program of rich audio and video imagery offering viewers a fresh and exciting chance to re-examine the power of the black experience as seen through the eyes of those who write about it.

Exhibition runs January 29, 2011 – March 27, 2011 “Free” to the public
