Smith is an artist, poet and illustrator who has been working in the Sacramento area since the 1970's. A few of his illustrations have been published in obscure literary journals. Some of his later paintings bear labels from an invented church. But for the most part his career appears to have unfolded in private. He started out painting hyper-violent fantasies that reek of family trauma and something like borderline personality disorder. His later works veer more in the direction of pop surrealism.
