While in Zanzibar, we had the wonderful honor one day to run into the hip painter Karanja. With his long dred locks and striking good looks we must admit our first thought was he must be a musician, but once we arrived at his studio and had the pleasure of spending the afternoon drinking Konyagi and discussing his work, it was all very clear.
Karanja's small paintings can be at times playful and serious all at the same time. He is very conscious of his
role as an artist and tries to pick subjects that have something of importance to say.
