Why monsters? It all started when I was a kid. I really enjoyed bugs and dinosaurs. I looked at "Creepy," "Eerie," and "Monsters" magazines. I watched "Ultra Man," collected Halloween decorations, and really dug the stop animation in "Jason and the Argonauts" and the "Sinbad" flicks. Dracula and Frankenstein were ok, but I was really a Creature of the Black Lagoon kind of child. The more weird or inhuman a monster was, the better.
That's probably why I later got into the weird/horror fiction of H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith. Their work has provided me with a multitude of inspiration and monster material! I consider my first encounter with offbeat or "lowbrow" art to be with Topps' "Ugly Stickers" from the early 70's. Those things blew my five year-old mind! All those bulging eyeballs and jagged teeth really hit the spot! The influences go on and on. Amongst all this madness I was constantly drawing and making art, a behavior that continues to this day!
